The Best Metal Songs of 2011

Mastodon Hunter cover The Best Metal Songs of 20112011 was an extremely exciting year for metalheads! After indie pop and rock had ruled the music scene the past 3 years, metal bands found sufficient invigoration and experimentation to win my heart.

Ad Sexiest YouTube Drummers The Best Metal Songs of 2011August Burns Red and Asking Alexandria surprised me by keeping the metalcore genre relevant. I’d even go so far as to say that August Burns Red’s album is one of the best the genre has produced. Killer ending to the song on the list below! Even bigger balls was vintage bands such as Machine Head and Anthrax finding not only their best form in years but reattaining the heights of their careers. Although they never made the list, a nod to Haken’s ‘Visions’, Darkest Hour’s ‘Savour the Kill’ and Morbid Angel’s ‘Existo Vulgore’. Mastodon proves to be the most consistent metal band by delivering their third, almost perfect, album in a row.

The Best Rock Songs of 2011

Every year there are sensational songs but 2011 was lacking in that most of the biggest were singles, like pop, songs for the moment rather than epics that will be remembered forever. Nevertheless, some bands stood out.

Ad Sexiest Women in Modern Rock The Best Rock Songs of 2011R.E.M. bowed out in style with a scorchingly, great rock. Blue October had me initially confused but i eventually got sucked in by their singer who is one of the greatest and most open-hearted lyricists ever. The culmination of RHCP’s ‘Brendan’s Death Song’ is easily one of their best moments. After releasing so many songs that sound the same, they have finally re-earned their rock god status (so losing Frusciante wasn’t the armageddon tragedy so many were predicting). Butch Walker cracks the top spot. He is, sadly, underrated by sales figures but his latest album, like his last, is perfect for what it is – wholehearted, real rock ‘n roll.  Almost every song should be on the chart but i eventually popped ‘Summer of ’89′ above all others.

It was fascinating witnessing classic stars returning to the music world, from Whitesnake and Lou Reed to Limp Bizkit and Bush. Although they never made it onto our list, special mention to Mr. Big’s song ‘Undertow’. Dropkick Murphy’s also deserve a shout-out for  ‘Going Out in Style’.

Unfortunately, i’ve yet to hear the apparently great releases from Uriah Heep, Wu Lyf, King’s Blues and Duff Mckagan (Guns ‘n Roses). Continue reading

The 13 Sexiest Women in Modern Rock

Damn tough choosing between pretty and pretty but sexy is a confidence when a woman knows herself and what she wants, can give but still own herself, can stand up to a man but be 100% woman. And, of course, she better have musical talent to make this list.
