Love and Death – Chemicals (review)

Love and Death Chemicals album cover Love and Death Chemicals (review)Ex-Korn guitarist, Brian Head Welch, makes a very Korn sounding release which is ironic since the latest Korn album never sounded like Korn. Brian is sure to come under fire for sounding like his origins but i’ve no problems with that since he was instrumental to their development. It may be more debatable that his singing style mimics Jonathan Davis but he caught me in a moment when i was eager for big hard rock with a sinister undertone (and that’s either damn funny considering his religious conversion to or further proof that christianity is the most diluted religion of all).

You may have already guessed that there are no revelations here but a good afternoon headbang is sure to be had. Continue reading

The Commuters – Rescue (review and download)

Commuters Rescue cover The Commuters Rescue (review and download)With members born of parents from Pakistan, India, Israel, France and the USA, it says a lot for a one world culture that New York based THE COMMUTERS have delivered Rescue, a friendly rock album that would work best as anthems on a large stage.

Even though the album could be boosted by bigger production, the songs are strong enough to shine through. ‘As I Make My Way’, their first single, is strongly reminiscent of Our Lady Peace’s output in the 2000s; constant rhythm, strong melody and climbing (yet easily accessible) vocals. An even bigger influence is Better Than Ezra which shines in many places, especially vocally. Rescue begs more variation but standouts such as the affirmative ‘We Are Breathing’, sombre ‘Fallen From Grace’ and catchy title track ensure that they are a band who deserves success. Counting Crows – Underwater Sunshine (review)

Counting Crows Underwater Sunshine album cover Counting Crows Underwater Sunshine (review)Hearing COUNTING CROWS again is like coming home after work, that combination of warmth and relief that becomes happiness after taking your shoes off, plonking yourself in a comfortable chair with a beer in one hand. The band has been a soundtrack to many of our lives but it’s latest “incarnations”, whether fair or unfair, never won over the 2000′s as they did the Nineties. There latest, Underwater Sunshine, won’t become an anthem to a new generation but is a comfortable listen with new directions.

‘Untitled (A Love Song)’ became an immediate favourite when subdued guitar screamed. Sure, that sounds like an oxymoron but it was certainly emotive and COUNTING CROWS aren’t a metal band – you’ll just have to listen for yourself. ‘Coming Around’ chorus touches pop with sing-a-long capability. The band introduces light country rock through ‘Start Again’ and continues with it in ‘Return of the Grievous Angel’, ‘Four White Stallions’, You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere’ and ‘Amie’. I’ve never been a fan of the genre but my mind has been persuaded by the possibility after listening to artists such as Brent Kozak and Bruce Springsteen who aren’t country singers but, like COUNTING CROWS here, utilize it as an element in a greater whole. Tim Pepper – Hotel EP (review)

Tim Pepper Hotel album cover 300x300 Tim Pepper – Hotel EP (review)TIM PEPPER is in a dark place. It’d be a better world if his guitar and voice saved him…but if it didn’t we’d still have the dark beauty of these songs to touch our flailing hopes, loss of faith and despair.

Whilst holed up in a Holiday Inn Express in Augusta, Georgia, Tim recorded 5 demos and set them free as a free download called Hotel (The Live EP).

Tim has always been a talented songwriter. He packs his music with sincerity and melody. Sometimes they’re uplifting, not fluffy like clouds but more a cool breeze on a summer’s day. Other times, they’re confessional shadows. This time they’re the latter but casting far deeper than before.

Download ‘Hard As Hell’. It’s as catchy and rhythmic as it is sad. Ironically, you’ll love it. Then you’ll head over to www.TimPepperMusic.com and download everything he’s got (most of it’s for free but this EP only until May22 2012).

Tim’s spoken intro to the track ’904′ encapsulates the tone of Hotel: Continue reading
