Young at Heart (documentary)

Not since a dying Freddie Mercury sang, “The show must go on,” has that line had as much meaning until the documentary Young at Heart.

Young at Heart is the name for an annual musical featuring a cast whose average age is 80 and eldest is 92. These fans of reserved music such as classical and opera are voluntarily pushed out of their comfort zones to where they sing rock and punk from bands such as The Ramones and Johnny Cash. hat1d S 228x300 The Top 13 BlogsThis proves that a blogger can’t choose which will be his most popular blogs. My top blogs smell of sensationalism, sex and not my best poems. Yet who am i to decide what people want? For those to make this list, they had to have been shared. Hell, It’s a Hard Life (for a Cockroach) is on the rise and will join these one day.

Before anything, unlike my other sites, this blog was suppose to be selfish. It’s a history of my life and opinions. I shoved the good in with the bad. Writing well wasn’t always a prerogative. Nevertheless, when i see the search strings bringing people here, i have to pause.

“Racism” is the biggest, surprisingly larger than “Japanese Tsunami”. “Hunger” is on the rise too. These topics are very close to my heart, from the micro context of my beautiful yet fucked up, home town of Knysna to the macro world.

Oddities from the past and jokes from the present will still be posted. I may even have fun with the popular “Dragon Sex” search but i intend being more diligent with non-fiction. After all, making people think is the first weapon against the apathy that is overwhelming our world.

Rebecca Black – Sex Sells or NOT?

rebecca.black2 300x270 Rebecca Black Sex Sells or NOT?Viral videos are often unfathomable! That’s the case with REBECCA BLACK’s song ‘Friday’. I wondered what the 60 million view fuss was about so i painfully wasted 3 minutes of my life watching the video that was made for a mere $2000.

I normally resort my reasoning for such phenomena to the stupification of mankind (accompanied by the fear that retards are going to be ruling the world in a decade’s time). Besides, what mental capacity does one need in order to be able to sing-a-long to the worst lyrics of the year. With this, i resorted to my usual #2 option which is the belief in “sex sells”. Cute, bonkable teen – world rushes to watch-

-BUT!-

dreamhost.banner 125x31 Rebecca Black Sex Sells or NOT?-it turns out REBECCA BLACK’s seemingly C-sized breasts are being carried by a 13 year old – oops! doesn’t cut it – FUCKING OOPS is more like it! So what the hell is  a rapper, possibly in his thirties, doing in her video, rapping as if there’s gonna be be a “sweet” time happening with his “RB”? Surely the record label should be lined up against the YouTube screen and shot! Throw in a parent or two?

rebecca.black1 300x274 Rebecca Black Sex Sells or NOT?Opposing the 40 000 sales figure for the single in its first week is the amount of hate for this song…and REBECCA BLACK has been targeted by insane comments encouraging suicide.  Stop me if i ever decide to have a child but if i ever made a mistake (let’s make it a girl too), i’d hope that she grow up listening to what i consider to be cool music. Be a teen Goth. Be Indie. Be a Metalhead. But if i utterly failed to mould my daughter in my image, and she, at age 13, sang and danced in a stupid song called ‘Friday’, i’d be the proudest dad ever and shout it to the world! And that’s before the expected $2 million in sales.

She’s 13. Let the kid have some fun!

PS: And her popularity is undoubtedly helping another project by the ARK Music Factory, this one for ALANA LEE (and this video is a lot purer at heart…EXCEPT for the animated sketch of – you guessed it – an older hip-hop singer rapping whilst the little girls lounge in their bikinis – fuck!):

Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog

dr.horribles.sing .a.long .blog Dr. Horribles Sing Along BlogDr Horrible’s Sing Along Blog is an internet mini-series invented by the incredible Joss Whedon, his brothers Jed and Zack, and his wife, Maurissa Tancharoen. It’s won numerous awards and features a cast you will have fallen in love with elsewhere on the big and small screen.

I bring it to my blog as homage to Joss Whedon who has produced some of my favourite series (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse), written/co-written some of the coolest movie scripts (Alien Resurrection, Toy Story, Serenity, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Titan A.E.) and worked on drafts of others (Speed, Twister).

Dr Horrible’s Sing Along Blog stars:
Neil Harris (Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother) as Dr. Horrible
Felicia Day (acted in episodes of Dollhouse and Buffy) as Penny
Nathan Fillion (Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly) as Captain Hammer
Simon Helberg (Howard from The Big Bang Theory) as Moist

Dr Horrible’s Sing Along Blog is the tale of Dr. Horrible’s war with Captain Hammer and their mutual love for Penny. It’s a comedy, musical and tragedy rolled into one. It’s a quirky, side-step to your day. Watch it here, in 7 minute parts (betting you start with “WTF” and start smiling at the end of the second clip below):
