Arguably, director Neill Blomkamp put South Africa on the international film map with District 9, his sci-fi tale interpretation of apartheid and xenophobia. Not only was it unheard of for a local director to get a $30 million (R220 million) budget but it became the sleeper hit of the year, raking in $210 million (R1.5 billion). And his producer was Peter Jackson of the Lord of the Rings fame!
Looks like District 10 (or whatever number gets chosen) is on the way cause viral marketing has begun. May be low key but it worked last time so it’s likely to work again. Check this out:
