The world of music is a tough place for indie bands to succeed in but Australia’s alternate rockers, MONKS OF MELLONWAH have made inroads with airplay on their country’s famous TripleJ radio as well as in LA, a town that further saluted them by awarding them Best International Rock Artist at the LA Music Awards.
Neurogenesis is their second EP and boast 4 tracks with mellow verses, patient builds and mini soars that always have melody at heart. The guitar of Joe de la Hoyde is my favourite ingredient – whether as support or in the numerous solos, there’s balance between epic and restraint so that the music is emotionalized without expense to the rest of the band’s input. That being said, the bass guitar could be used more for emphasis.
Lyrically, the album matches the lead guitar’s attitude, simple in chorus for catchiness but thoughtful in verse such as, “He saw the seeds and he saw the earth, red trigger pulling the thread. Couldn’t contemplate the place or what had crawled in his head. No, no, no. no…”
Favourite song is the title track, ‘Neurogenesis’.
2013 will find them release their debut album. You should give their new track, ‘Sky and the Dark Night‘, a well-deserved listen here.
