Every year there are sensational songs but 2011 was lacking in that most of the biggest were singles, like pop, songs for the moment rather than epics that will be remembered forever. Nevertheless, some bands stood out.
R.E.M. bowed out in style with a scorchingly, great rock. Blue October had me initially confused but i eventually got sucked in by their singer who is one of the greatest and most open-hearted lyricists ever. The culmination of RHCP’s ‘Brendan’s Death Song’ is easily one of their best moments. After releasing so many songs that sound the same, they have finally re-earned their rock god status (so losing Frusciante wasn’t the armageddon tragedy so many were predicting). Butch Walker cracks the top spot. He is, sadly, underrated by sales figures but his latest album, like his last, is perfect for what it is – wholehearted, real rock ‘n roll. Almost every song should be on the chart but i eventually popped ‘Summer of ’89′ above all others.
