A river of sensational sound thrusting its way through a small hole in a mountain to sprawl itself onto a restful plain before yelling “yip-pee-ky-yay”as it bungees into the planets deepest canyon. Yes, TOOL’S Lateralus is powerful stuff! It’s music yelling into consciousness.
The only schism I experienced was in attempting to choose a fab track. I gave up. If I threw the likes of ‘The Grudge’, ‘Parabola’ and ‘Lateralus’ at you, you would battle too.
What does the album title mean? My computer says that it’s a spelling mistake. I could spit my opinion but it would probably be different to someone else’s. And that is part of the joy. This is a work of discovery. Your revelation will be different to mine. And the packaging. Wow! Hold each page up to the sun. No, you’re not on acid. You’re just looking at BRILLIANCE!!!
In complexity, only Kid A came close at the time. It will be debated. I predicted in 2001 that Lateralus would be one of the landmarks of the decade and live on as a cult icon. I was right.
