First Aid Kit - The Lion's Roar (album cover)I graduated from voyeur to music fan when FIRST AID KIT’s music turned out to be as beautiful as its singing sisters.

The Lion’s Roar is more a butterfly’s whisper than the yell of an African beast. The title track is thankfully one of the best, an incredible sweet slice of folk rock. ‘Emmylou’ is as country as the singer it’s named after, a patient river in a Southern bayou. Tempos and melody may alter to small degree but the first two songs frame the album’s genres. Other notables are ‘Blue’, ‘To a Poet’ and ‘King of the World’. Continue reading

Cold Specks - I Predict a Graceful Expulsion (cover)Canada never got it’s fair music due but the explosion in indie bands the past decade is surely making up for it. Toronto, in particular, has served a rich, musical feast. Think Stars, Feist, Broken Social Scene, Zeus, Metric and Final Fantasy. One of the newest kids on the block is Al Spx whose debut album, I Predict a Graceful Expulsion, has been released under the band name, COLD SPECKS. She is every bit as good as those big names mentioned but, as the album title suggests, she’s possibly the most graceful too.
